Carpe Iter Caretta sets a high bar for motorcycle navigation. John Milbank rode 3000 miles with it, including 1200 in Spain in 44°C heat. The device never shut down. His phone did.
Caretta costs £829.99 in the UK. It runs Android 14 with updates promised to 18. Riders can install apps such as Calimoto, OsmAnd, Google Maps, TomTom Go and more. It works offline with downloaded maps. It also takes a SIM for calls and data.
The 7 inch 1920×1200 screen reaches 2200 nits. It stays readable in direct sun. At night it dims lower than most rivals, which reduces glare on dark roads.
Power comes through a 12V cradle with battery bypass circuitry. That prevents overheating common with USB powered tablets. The unit refreshes GPS at up to 10Hz for accurate tracking.
BMW owners can add an £11.80 cable for full Wonder Wheel control and CAN data. Other bikes can use Bluetooth or wired controllers.
It weighs 1.02kg with cradle. It suits touring and adventure bikes best.
Milbank says riders who want full control over apps and mapping will see real value. Casual users may prefer a simpler sat nav.
My two cents…
Carpe Iter Caretta basically laughs at your overheated phone and says, is that all you got? John Milbank rode 3000 miles with it, 1200 of those in Spain at a toasty 44°C. The Caretta kept humming. His phone tapped out.
