The action camera market keeps splitting into two camps. GoPro and Insta360 sit at the top, charging premium prices for their gear. But underneath them, a whole crowd of budget brands keeps churning out cheaper alternatives, chasing customers who want decent footage without spending big money.
Companies like Akaso, SJCAM, and DJI’s lower tier options fill that gap. They copy the basic formula, waterproof bodies, wide angle lenses, mounting systems, but skip some of the polish. Stabilization tends to be weaker. App support can be clunky. Battery life sometimes falls short compared to flagship models.
Still, these cameras sell well because most people don’t need professional grade video. A tourist filming a hike or a kid recording skateboard tricks doesn’t require the same specs as a filmmaker. Price matters more than perfection for that crowd.
This pattern shows up across plenty of tech categories, phones, laptops, headphones. One or two brands set the standard, then smaller companies build products aimed at buyers who care more about cost than cutting edge features. Action cameras just happen to be a clear example of how that dynamic plays out in real time.
My two cents…
Two class system, basically. GoPro and Insta360 play emperor, everyone else scrambles for scraps.
