John Milbank tested the Abus Granit Detecto XPlus 8077 2.0, a compact alarmed disc lock priced at £170. The lock weighs 934g and secures directly to the brake rotor. It auto-arms through a built-in switch and uses standard AAA batteries. A 100dB alarm provides deterrence against tampering. The system can pair with an optional 12KS noose chain, expanding security by anchoring the motorcycle to a fixed object.
Certification to Sold Secure Powered Cycle Gold means the 8077 resists drills, hammers, and prying tools. In testing, it withstood these attacks but did yield to an angle-grinder under controlled conditions. The alarm module endured rain exposure without failure. The optional chain, weighing 3.9kg, also resisted bolt-cutters, prying, and hammering.
Although the alarm volume could be higher, the lock is simple to use and weather-resistant. The noose-chain setup adds flexibility and more secure anchoring, especially for street parking. Real-world data suggests disc locks like this can cut the risk of theft by up to three times.
At a street price near £130, or £230 with the chain, the Abus 8077 2.0 offers strong value. Solid build, practical operation, and multi-layered protection make it a smart choice for daily riders.
My two cents…
John Milbank drops another great review! Worth a read if you need to upgrade your bikes security.
