A new app rolling out this week aims to make it easier for friends and family to stay in touch when they are out and about. The tool, built into group messaging apps, lets users see real time updates from everyone in their circle, as long as their phone has a signal.
Developers say the update was built with hikers, festival goers and parents keeping tabs on kids in mind. If someone wanders off or loses track of the group, a quick glance at the app shows where everyone stands, literally.
Of course, the catch is obvious. Without a cell connection, the feature goes dark. That means dead zones, remote trails or crowded venues with spotty towers could leave users guessing. Still, for most everyday situations, like a shopping mall, a concert or a busy street fair, the tool should do its job just fine.
Early testers say the biggest perk is peace of mind. Instead of texting “where are you” over and over, people can check the map and move on with their day.
The feature is already live for select users, with a wider rollout expected in the coming weeks.
My two cents…
Great, another app promising to end “where are you” texts, the unofficial love language of group chats everywhere. Catch? No signal, no magic. Dead zones still win.
