Garmin will now give users 12 months of free SOS access on inReach devices, even if their subscription sits suspended. The company shared the update in a recent press release. It applies to customers who pause service during the year.
Many outdoor riders and hikers suspend plans when they do not need satellite coverage. They forget to reactivate before the next trip. In a remote emergency, that gap can turn serious. Garmin wants to close it.
InReach devices allow two way satellite messaging anywhere in the world. Users can send an interactive SOS to Garmin Response, a 24 hour emergency coordination center. The feature works beyond cell range. The product line includes handheld units and compatible watches.
Garmin says the free SOS window lasts up to 12 months from the date of suspension. Users still need an active device and a registered account.
Backcountry riders, hunters, and snowmobile owners often travel miles from help. In those areas, response time matters. Garmin aims to make sure a paused subscription does not block a life saving call when every second counts.
My two cents…
Garmin just did something shockingly wholesome. If you own an inReach and pause your subscription, you now get 12 months of free SOS access anyway. Yes, even if you forgot to flip the switch back on before your grand wilderness comeback tour. Progress.Plenty of hikers and riders suspend service when they are not using satellite coverage. Then they head out again, thinking about snacks, not subscriptions. In a real emergency, that oversight gets scary fast. Garmin clearly noticed.InReach devices send two way satellite messages worldwide and ping a 24 hour response center beyond cell range. Handhelds, watches, the works. Because when you are miles from help, this is not the moment for a “well, damn” realization. Ask anyone who survived the flip phone era.
