BMW Patents Logo Shaped Screws Requiring Custom Tools

BMW is drawing attention after filing a patent for new screw heads shaped like its iconic roundel logo. The design replaces standard Torx and Allen heads with fasteners embossed with the BMW letters and the familiar blue-and-white pattern.

The screws are designed to fit only with matching tools. That could make basic maintenance difficult for riders without dealership equipment. Allen and Torx heads have long been preferred because they handle torque efficiently and are easy to manufacture. It is unclear whether the new roundel design can match that performance.

Industry watchers note that specialized fixings often push owners toward official servicing. The new screws could make independent or home repairs more complicated and expensive. Tool kits for these fasteners are not expected to be cheap, and early aftermarket versions could vary in quality.

The design remains a patent for now, with no sign of production use. Still, if BMW installs the new screws on future bikes or cars, riders may find themselves needing custom tools for even simple repairs. For now, BMW enthusiasts are watching closely to see whether these stylish bolts ever leave the patent office and find their way onto real machines.

My two cents…

BMW has apparently decided regular screws aren’t premium enough and filed a patent for bolts shaped like the BMW logo. The Sunday Starbucks boys will eat these up if it actually happens 🙂
